“A little parcel of land rose up in a picturesque golden landscape, the air was pure, the warm breeze rustled through bushes of prickly pears, ancient olive groves dotted amongst vineyards and almonds, jasmine and wild mint, the speckled rays of the sun gently warming paradise.”
The year was 1967 and this was the natural splendour that enthralled the Baronessa Serafini Sauli, whereupon she fell madly in love with this place, so much so that she was to choose it as her own private residence.
From this most wonderful of stages in nature’s theatre, the Baronessa’s eyes gazed out from her terraces over a wandering horizon where the sea and sky blend into indigo and pass mysteriously into the infinite.
In 1982, Gibò was discovered by Gigi Costa, an event that was to transform this place into something even more special and unique.
Working under the auspices of the specialist architect Ippazio Fersini, magnificent restoration work was carried out in order to enhance the natural identity of Gibò through the use of local stone (limestones and tufa), adorned with the local maquis flora of this region.
From the outset, the aim was to immerse the visitor in an environment of infinite well-being and enhance its enjoyment and pleasure.
Indeed, the infrastructural works were even the subject of an essay: The Architecture of Stone, by Alfonzo Acocella (2005), which also includes:
“This architecture is so intimately connected with the landscape of stone, that it does not seem the work of man, but rather a rocky formation spontaneously created by Mother Earth…”.
A veritable jewel of incomparable beauty, Gibò has in time become a most elegant and exclusive location where you can spend your nights in Salento.
This is all down to the relentless passion of its founder Gigi Costa who, with special events, cabaret shows and theme parties, offers guests from all over the world a truly unique and inspiring experience.
As an entrepreneur who is both extraordinary and brilliant and always deeply loved and admired for his charisma, humility and foresight, with Gibò, Gigi Costa has undoubtedly contributed to the fame of Salento in creating a place that is renowned throughout Italy – a symbol of brilliance, exclusivity and elegance.
Today, Gigi works in close collaboration with his daughters Marta and Alessandra so as to keep his life’s project going – a project that is rich in emotion and everlasting love.
“Una sottile lingua di terra sembrò sollevarsi sull’oro di un paesaggio pittoresco: l’aria era purissima, il vento caldo, piante di fichi d’india, campi di ulivi secolari intervallati da vigneti e mandorli, luce di gelsomini e menta selvatica, scheggia di sole e di Paradiso.”
Fu di fronte allo splendore di questo spettacolo che nel 1967 la baronessa Serafini Sauli s’innamorò perdutamente di questo luogo a tal punto da sceglierlo come sua dimora privata e meraviglioso palcoscenico di vita.
Dalle terrazze il suo sguardo si perse sull’orizzonte: mare e cielo uniti dall’indaco sui confini dell’immensità.
Nel 1982 il Gibò fu rilevato da Gigi Costa che lo rese ancora più unico condividendo le direttive e le scelte progettuali del professionista incaricato, l’architetto Ippazio Fersini.
Ad essere messo in atto fu un magnifico lavoro di restauro finalizzato a valorizzare l’identità del luogo attraverso l’utilizzo di materiali lapidei locali (pietrame calcareo e conci di tufo), adornato di essenze vegetali della macchia mediterranea che maggiormente predominano nella zona.
Sin dal principio l’obiettivo fu quello di porre il visitatore nella condizione di sentirsi immerso in un contesto di infinito benessere.
L’opera è stata oggetto di un saggio, nel volume pubblicato nel 2005, “L’architettura di Pietra” di Alfonzo Acocella, che tra l’altro annovera:
“Questa architettura è così intimamente connessa con il paesaggio pietroso da sembrare più che opera dell’uomo, formazione rocciosa spontanea della terra madre…”
Gioiello di incommensurabile bellezza, il Gibò divenne nel tempo la più elegante ed esclusiva location dove trascorrere le notti nel Salento grazie alla passione implacabile del suo fondatore che, con eventi speciali, spettacoli di cabaret e feste a tema, regalò emozioni uniche a clienti e visitatori di tutto il mondo.
Imprenditore straordinario e geniale, da sempre profondamente amato e stimato per il suo carisma, la sua umiltà e lungimiranza, Gigi Costa ha senza dubbio contribuito, con il Gibò, alla notorietà del Salento dando vita ad una realtà famosa in tutta Italia, simbolo di splendore, esclusività ed eleganza.
Oggi si avvale della preziosa collaborazione delle figlie Marta ed Alessandra per continuare un progetto di vita che si nutre d’amore e profuma di eterno.
